Wilderness Dreams The Call of Scotland’s Last Wild Places

Free Download Mike Cawthorne, "Wilderness Dreams: The Call of Scotland’s Last Wild Places"
English | 2011 | ISBN: 1903238900 | EPUB | pages: 196 | 6.1 mb
This book has been a long time in the writing. While Mike Cawthorne’s life over the last two decades has been mostly involved in climbing and journalism, he has managed to stow away a large memory bank of experiences of his times spent deep within the wilderness areas of Scotland. These 8 extended essays begin with a canoe trip down the River Dee in 2002 ("Tale of Two Rivers") and his epic round of the Munros in the company of his friend Dave Hughes in 1986 ("Paupers and Kings"). "Terra Ingognita" deals with the Monadliath mountains, ‘one of the last places left on these crowded islands where you can experience genuine solitude’. "Crofting on the Edge" deals with people Mike has encountered who have chosen to live in the most remote and inaccessible areas of Scotland as does "The Hermit’s Story", which describes the life that James McRory-Smith chose to lead in Strathailleach, a shepherd’s cottage near Cape Wrath. "A Last Wild Place" describes the ruination of many of these wilderness areas and the efforts made by large energy companies to exploit these special places. ‘…only wilderness if you can be killed and eaten’ is a quote by American writer Edward Abbey referring to grizzly bears stalking humans in the Rockies. Mike recalls this in "Dying for Trees" as he spends a day on Creag Meagaidh with a deer-stalking party where a minor bio-diversity miracle has taken place by carefully controlling deer numbers to allow the spread of broadleaf woodland. "Scotland’s Alaska" is the final essay on Sutherland’s flow country…’the best and worst of wild Britain.’

The Material Landscapes of Scotland’s Jewellery Craft, 1780-1914 (PDF)

Free Download The Material Landscapes of Scotland’s Jewellery Craft, 1780-1914 (Material Culture of Art and Design) by Sarah Laurenson, edited by Michael Yonan
English | July 27, 2023 | ISBN: 1501358006, 1350469920 | True PDF | 272 pages | 70.9 MB
During the long 19th century, Scotland was home to an established body of skilled jewellers who were able to access a range of materials from the country’s varied natural landscape: precious gold and silver; sparkling crystals and colourful stones; freshwater pearls, shells and parts of rare animals. Following these materials on their journey from hill and shore, across the jeweller’s bench and on to the bodies of wearers, this book challenges the persistent notion that the forces of industrialisation led to the decline of craft. It instead reveals a vivid picture of skilled producers who were driving new and revived areas of hand skill, and who were key to fostering a focused cultural engagement with the natural world – among both producers and consumers – through the things they made. By placing producers and their skill in cultural context, the book reveals how examining the materiality of even the smallest of objects can offer new and multifaceted insights into the wider transformations that marked British history during the long 19th century.

Most people are familiar with references to Scottish battles such as Bannockburn and Flodden but know little if anything about those events. Rugby and soccer fans outside Scotland may wonder at the sign ‘1314’ held up by Scottish fans and not know that it is the date of the Battle of Bannockburn when an English king was defeated on Scottish soil. The battle is also commemorated in Scotland’s unofficial national anthem, ‘The Flower of Scotland’. Battles fought on Scottish soil include those of the Scottish Wars of Independence, those occasioned by the English Civil Wars and the Jacobite Rebelli.

Author: T.M. Devine

The Scots are one of the world’s greatest nations of emigrants. For centuries, untold numbers of men, women, and children sought their fortunes in every part of the globe, from the British Empire to the United States, in cities and on prairie farms, as traders, bankers, missionaries, soldiers, politicians, and engineers. With To the Ends of the Earth, T. M. Devine-acclaimed author-puts this extraordinary epic center stage in Scottish history, cutting through myth and sentiment surrounding stories such as the Highland Clearances and the Enlightenment to show the true impact of Scottish emigration on the world, and on the nation it left behind.
