The Political Aspects of St. Augustine’s City of God

When one civilization has fallen and another is in its birth throes, people are apt to be seduced by the rushlights of a false leadership. The mind and mood of such a time of transition are intensely puzzling and those who would meet its needs must have insight and vision. The Epistle to the Hebrews was written after the fall of Jerusalem in the interest of a larger faith and in defense of the substantial authority of Christianity. When Rome was sacked by Alaric in 410 A. D., the shock of the catastrophe reacted against Christianity. Augustine wrote the De Civitate Dei to prove that the disaster was the inevitable Nemesis of the luxuries and corruptions of the citizenship and had little to do with Christianity, which had only a slight hold on public life. He also pointed out the contrast between the actual city to which the Romans were fanatically devoted, and the ideal city of his prophetic vision, contending that this ideal is eternal and unrealized but in process of realization. He was further convinced that Christianity was not merely a superior gnosis but a scheme of redemption, justified by its higher ethical standards and by the better conduct of its adherents. This apology has all the limitations of the time and the writer, but Augustine was a mystic and a statesman, and the im-ortance of this writing is in the fact that "in it for the first time an ideal consideration, a comprehensive survey of human history found its expression."

Fallen Angels in the Theology of St Augustine

Free Download Gregory D. Wiebe, "Fallen Angels in the Theology of St Augustine "
English | ISBN: 0192846035 | 2021 | 288 pages | EPUB, PDF | 1048 KB + 2 MB
This book ventures to describe Augustine of Hippo’s understanding of demons, including the theology, angelology, and anthropology that contextualize it. Demons are, for Augustine as for the Psalmist (95:5 LXX) and the Apostle (1 Cor 10:20), the "gods of the nations." This means that Augustine’s demons are best understood neither when they are "spiritualized" as personifications of psychological struggles, nor in terms of materialist contagions that undergird a superstitious moralism. Rather, because the gods of the nations are the paradigm of demonic power and influence over humanity, Augustine sees the Christian’s moral struggle against them within broader questions of social bonds, cultural form, popular opinion, philosophical investigation, liturgical movement, and so forth. In a word, Augustine’s demons have a religious significance, particularly in its Augustinian sense of bonds and duties between persons, and between persons and that which is divine. Demons are a highly

St. John of the Cross A Guide to Understanding the Mystical Doctor

Free Download St. John of the Cross: A Guide to Understanding the Mystical Doctor By Steven Payne; John Sullivan; Michael Dodd
2012 | 240 Pages | ISBN: 193685516X | EPUB | 1 MB
This volume represents an opportunity for the Discalced Carmelite friars to express their gratitude to the one we call our Holy Father, St. John of the Cross, and to explore his timely message, not just for ourselves, but for the whole contemporary church and world. Yet at the same time, our contributors are well aware of John s words in Stanzas concerning an ecstasy experienced in high contemplation: This knowledge is unknowing is so overwhelming that wise men disputing can never overthrow it, for their knowledge does not reach to the understanding of not understanding transcending all knowledge. These essays, then, make no claim to fully explain or capture the inexhaustible riches of John s doctrine, or the experience of God he describes. Our hope is, rather, that they may provide readers with some guidance in understanding John, and some nourishment for their own journey into the infinite mystery of the divine. Where there is no love, put love and you will draw out love. St. John of the Cross

Who needs God Barbara Stöckl in Conversation with Christoph Cardinal Schönborn

2009 | 193 Pages | ISBN: 1586172840 | EPUB | 1 MB
We are experiencing a dramatic social upheaval in today’s world, a breakdown of our living conditions and values. A non-stop world: No one can stop it, and we find no place to stop in it. Political boundaries become less important; social structures seem to disintegrate?all is subordinated to cash flow and profit maximization. With growing individualism, the concept of the good and proper life has been lost. Whether one is faithful or unfaithful, fair or unfair, honest or dishonest seems to have less importance. Freedom and prosperity are the magic words. We live flexibly and without commitment, go where we wish, when we wish. This does not produce living conditions that facilitate belief in God and contact with God, as one perhaps had during childhood. The longing for old values such as faith and deeper spiritual meaning has consequently been reawakened. What repercussions does this development have on society, children, the elderly, the ill? Whom do people allow first to be God? Who is our pilot? Is it the coach, the psychologist, the investment counselor? Who is supposed to support man in the future through his crisis, whether public or private? Who needs God? What does God provide? Can we truly live without faith or the Church? Why does the Church so often seem not to understand us and our needs? These and many other questions posed to Christoph Cardinal Sch?nborn in this book are the questions asked today by many people who are searching for God and want to live the experience of faith.
