The history of Indian tennis begins in the late nineteenth century, soon after it was established as a competitive sport in England. The sport quickly caught the imagination of the colonised just as much as it had of the colonisers. In those early years, Mohammed Sleem, the Fyzee brothers, S.M. Jacob and Ghaus Mohammed (whose genius was sadly curtailed by the Second World War) were the heroes tennis needed, claiming it for India.

Genre / Category:PhotographyFile Size :1Gb
This class covers the post-production process of the tennis racket product shoot. The shoot itself included many unexpected variables, which meant this retouch was slightly more complex than what was originally anticipated. The first challenge that had to be dealt with was aligning the different base shots. Because of the impact of the tennis ball, the racket had moved slightly, which meant a combination of tools had to be used to change and adjust the shape to get everything to line up. The next step was to perfect the powder trail. This involved using cloning and healing tools as well as adjusting the opacity to create more of a sense of motion. Further retouching considerations including removing dust and burning and dodging.

In August 1939, Alice Marble graced the cover of Life magazine, photographed by Alfred Eisenstaedt. She was a glamorous worldwide celebrity, having that year won singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles tennis titles at both Wimbledon and the US Open, then an unprecedented feat. Yet today one of America’s greatest female athletes and most charismatic characters is largely forgotten. Queen of the Court places her back on center stage. Given a tennis racket at thirteen, she took to the sport immediately, rising to the top with a powerful, aggressive serve-and-volley style unseen in women’s tennis. A champion at the height of her fame in the late 1930s, she also designed a clothing line and sang as a performer.

Author: Sally H. Jacobs
Narrator: Chanté McCormick

"A captivating book that brilliantly reveals an American sports legend long overlooked. Sally Jacobs tells the riveting story of Althea Gibson, my personal shero, who overcame daunting odds-on the tennis court and off-to stand at the world pinnacle of her sport and became an inspiration to many." In 1950, three years after Jackie Robinson first walked onto the diamond at Ebbets Field, the all-white, upper-crust US Lawn Tennis Association opened its door just a crack to receive a powerhouse player who would integrate "the game of royalty." The player was a street-savvy young Black woman from Harlem named Althea Gibson who was about as out-of-place in that rarefied and intolerant world as any aspiring tennis champion could be. Her tattered jeans and short-cropped hair drew stares from everyone who watched her play, but her astonishing performance on the court soon eclipsed the negative feelings being cast her way as she eventually became one of the greatest American tennis champions.
