Coming to Terms

Free Download William Safire, "Coming to Terms"
English | 1991 | pages: 402 | ISBN: 0385413009 | EPUB | 2,2 mb
In this seventh collection of his playful, witty, instructive "On Language" syndicated columns, Safire again reprints letters from members of the Gotcha Gang and the Nitpickers’ League, and other readers who have their own two cents to add. Among his concerns in this batch, Safire explains why he hasn’t used the phrase gilding the lily for 40 years ("Eschew certitude," he warns in this connection). He comments on the trend toward mispronunciation, giving ek-setera and reckonize as examples; looks into the origins of such words as bimbo and roundheels ; examines such euphemisms for lover as significant other , special friend and main squeeze ; pays tribute to Yogi Berra’s mastery of the "bonaprop"; and reports what happened when the management of a San Francisco hotel adopted Safire’s recommendation of putting a dictionary in every room. For those who care about language, or who just want to have fun, Safire delivers.

Free Download Terms of Disservice: How Silicon Valley is Destructive by Design By Dipayan Ghosh
2020 | 320 Pages | ISBN: 0815737661 | PDF | 9 MB
Designing a new digital social contract for our technological futureHigh technology presents a paradox. In just a few decades, it has transformed the world, making almost limitless quantities of information instantly available to billions of people and reshaping businesses, institutions, and even entire economies. But it also has come to rule our lives, addicting many of us to the march of megapixels across electronic screens both large and small.Despite its undeniable value, technology is exacerbating deep social and political divisions in many societies. Elections influenced by fake news and unscrupulous hidden actors, the cyber-hacking of trusted national institutions, the vacuuming of private information by Silicon Valley behemoths, ongoing threats to vital infrastructure from terrorist groups and even foreign governments-all these concerns are now part of the daily news cycle and are certain to become increasingly serious into the future. In this new world of endless technology, how can individuals, institutions, and governments harness its positive contributions while protecting each of us, no matter who or where we are?In this book, a former Facebook public policy adviser who went on to assist President Obama in the White House offers practical ideas for using technology to create an open and accessible world that protects all consumers and civilians. As a computer scientist turned policymaker, Dipayan Ghosh answers the biggest questions about technology facing the world today. Proving clear and understandable explanations for complex issues, Terms of Disservice will guide industry leaders, policymakers, and the general public as we think about how we ensure that the Internet works for everyone, not just Silicon Valley.

Christian and Related Terms Used in Interlinear Glosses in the Old English Period

Free Download Michiko Ogura, "Christian and Related Terms Used in Interlinear Glosses in the Old English Period "
English | ISBN: 3631884435 | 2022 | 1094 pages | PDF | 11 MB
This monograph presents Old English renderings of Christian words found in interlinear glosses, especially the Gospels and the Psalter glosses. Nouns, adjectives, adverbs and verbs in biblical contexts are included through dialectal (Northumbrian, Mercian, and West Saxon) diachronic (early and late West Saxon) and idiolectal (i.e. scribal) comparison. By using interlinear glosses, the correspondence between the original Latin word and the Old English rendering can be recognised more clearly than in ordinary prose, and at the same time, a flexible choice of renderings can be seen in some contexts. The author tries to show which Old English words were chosen as renderings, while some Latin words were accepted without translation.
