War and an Irish Town

McCann’s account of what it is like to grow up a Catholic in a Northern Irish ghetto – first published in 1974 – quickly became a classic account of the feelings generated by British rule. The author was at the center of events in Derry which first brought Northern Ireland to world attention. He witnessed the gradual transformation of the civil rights movement from a mild campaign for "British Democracy" to an all-out military assault on the British state.
This book describes the people involved in the war, gives an account of the springs of the "Catholic" opposition, tells what their world was like and how their background affected the daily conduct of events. McCann gets beyond the rhetoric of the organized groups to the real people involved – people who are not so different from those in any other British town.

Secretly, if not overtly, almost everyone in America desires to become to make it big, to enjoy the fruits of the most successful life imaginable. But unfortunately, most of us don’t have a clue how to reach these all too elusive goals. Quite simply, there’s no definitive road map for getting there, no proven plan, and certainly very little access to those who have become "the richest man in town."But now W. Randall Jones, the founder of "Worth "magazine, is about to change all that. He’s traveled to one hundred different towns and cities across the country and interviewed the wealthiest resident in each. No, these are not those folks who inherited their wealth, or happen to be a CEO of a "Fortune" 500 company. Rather, these are the self-made types who, through hard work and ingenuity, found their own individual paths to financial success.Remarkably, during his research, Jones found that these successful people were not so different from one another. They all shared many of the same traits and followed what the author calls the Twelve Commandments of stay hungry (even when you’re successful) . . . you really do learn more from failing than you may think . . . absolutely be your own boss, the sooner the better . . . understand that selling is the key to success . . . where you live doesn’t matter . . . never retire, and other, more surprising revelations.Practical, unique, and inspiring, this book lets you peek inside the living rooms of dozens of America’s most successful people-and shows how you, too, can become THE RICHEST MAN IN TOWN.

Author: Casey Bukro
Narrator: Adam Barr

Nuclear power once promised to be the solution to the world’s energy crisis, but that all changed in the late twentieth century after multiple high-profile accidents and meltdowns. Power plant workers, finding themselves the subject of public opposition, became leery of reporters. But one plant in Zion, Illinois, allowed unrestricted access to one journalist: the Chicago Tribune’s Casey Bukro. Bukro spent two years inside the Zion nuclear plant, interviewing employees, witnessing high-risk maintenance procedures, and watching the radiation exposure counter on his own dosimeter tick up and up. In Higher Power, Bukro’s reporting from the plant is prefaced by a compelling history of the city of Zion, including a tell-all of John Alexander Dowie, a nineteenth-century "faith healer" who founded Zion, and whose evangelism left a mark on the city well into the modern era, even as a new "higher" power-nuclear energy-moved into town. With the acceleration of climate change, the questions and challenges surrounding nuclear power have never been more relevant. Should we try to address the mistakes made in the past? What part could nuclear power play in our energy future? Higher Power explores these questions and examines one American town’s attempts to build a better society as a bellwether for national policy and decision making.

English | ISBN: 1789695678 | 2020 | 120 pages | PDF | 11 MB
The Urban Landscape of Bakchias: A Town of the Fayyūm from the Ptolemaic-Roman Period to Late Antiquity summarises the results of field research conducted on the archaeological site of Bakchias, located in the north-eastern part of the Fayyūm region. Historical, historico-religious and papyrological studies are also presented. The book provides a clear and comprehensive overview of the rise and fall of the kome of Bakchias. The settlement was a thriving centre from at least the 26th dynasty up until the ninth or tenth centuries CE, although with differing levels of economic prosperity and urban development. Equal weight is given not only to the archaeological and topographical aspects but also to the historical and the religious, whilst never forgetting the relationship between the urban settlement and other villages of the Arsinoite nomos, which is famously a peculiar exception in Egyptian geography.

Can a group of well-intentioned people fulfill the promise of racial integration in America? In this searing and deeply researched examination of the promises and realities of racial integration, award-winning Washington Post journalist Laura Meckler aims to uncover where the problem lies and to shed light on what’s being done to move forward-in housing, in education, and in the promise of shared community. In the late 1950s, Shaker Heights became a national model for housing integration. And beginning in the seventies, it was known as a crown jewel in the national move to racially integrate schools. The school district built a national reputation for academic excellence and diversity, serving as a model for how white and Black Americans can not just coexist but thrive together.
