Precipitation Partitioning by Vegetation A Global Synthesis (2024)

This book presents research on precipitation partitioning processes in vegetated ecosystems, putting them into a global context. It describes the processes by which meteoric water comes into contact with the vegetation’s canopy, typically the first surface contact of precipitation on land. It also discusses how precipitation partitioning by vegetation impacts the amount, patterning, and chemistry of water reaching the surface, as well as the amount and timing of evaporative return to the atmosphere. Although this process has been extensively studied, this is the first review of the global literature on the partitioning of precipitation by forests, shrubs, crops, grasslands and other less-studies plant types.

Another volume in the popular New Naturalist series, this book covers all aspects of the plant life of Britain and Ireland. Michael Proctor, an expert in his field, discusses the development of the landscape of Britain and Ireland from prehistoric times, including the influence of people and their agricultural practices on the vegetation. He provides a comprehensive account of all the different types of plant habitat in Britain and from woodlands and scrubland to meadows and grasslands, from wetlands and peatlands to heaths, and from the mountain vegetation to the sea coast. He examines the history and ecology of each of these habitats, and describes the rich variety of flora found living there. The author concludes with an account of the changes to our landscape which have taken place during the twentieth century, and prospects for the future, including the effects of environmental change.

The Vegetation and Physiography of Sumatra

Fifteen years ago, approximately half the world population was estimated to live in continental and insular South-East Asia (Burma, Thailand, Kampuchea, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, Philippines). Then the region had a population growth of four million people every month, and the problem of malnutrition was acute for the rural population. International agricultural development organisations decided that their primary aim would be to double existing levels of agricultural production and, taking account of population growth, to double it again by the end of the century (Whyte 1976). Today, while global issues have greatly affected the parameters of the problem, the situation remains both serious and difficult. Despite impressive efforts in education and health, Indonesia for example, where population (179 millions) growth eased off only slightly between 1980 and 1990 (from 2. 3 percent to 1. 9 percent), is having to cope with increasing difficulties in managing natural resources and particularly its evanescent forest assets which, until 1986, were the second largest source of national revenue. Indonesia has the second largest surface area of tropical rain forests in the world (after Brazil) and thus all the problems linked with management and disappearance of those forests. The latest estimate gives a figure of 109 million hectares of forest in 1990, of which 40. 8 million hectares are production forests (Anon. -F AO 1990).

Vegetation Fires and Pollution in Asia

Vegetation fires are prevalent in several regions of the world, including South/ Southeast Asia (S/SEA). Fire occurrence and spread are influenced by fuel type, topography, climate, weather, and lightning, among others. In S/SEA, human-initiated fires are responsible for most of the incidents in addition to natural factors. Through biomass burning, vegetation fires can emit large quantities of greenhouse gases and air pollutants such as CO2, CO, NOx, CH4, non-methane hydrocarbons, and other chemical species, including aerosols that can affect air quality and health at both local and regional scales. Moreover, biomass burning pollutants can travel long distances and impact regional climate. Therefore, quantifying vegetation fires and their impacts is critical at different spatial scales.

Vegetation and Plants for Games A 6-week course exploring the creation of vegetation and plant design for environment art

During this 6-week course, students will create a small vignette environment focusing heavily on the creation of vegetation and plants. The process will include using a tree as the focal point, creating a bark texture, importing these assets into Unreal Development Kit, and composing a final portfolio-ready shot. Lectures will demonstrate several different tools and workflows to achieve quality assets, tools that include Maya, SpeedTree, Zbrush, Substance Designer/Painter and the Unreal Development Kit. The instructor will work with each student individually to narrow down reference and ideas to create a vegetation kit with which to build a strong vignette environment. Lectures will cover how to utilize color, composition, and scope to create a cohesive look.
Upon completion each student will have an aesthetically pleasing piece for their portfolios, as well as a strong foundation that will translate into a modern understanding of the foliage pipeline for video games. Throughout the course, students will develop an understanding of the modern foliage creation pipeline, as well as the necessary skills to problem solve most forms of foliage. By the end of this course, students will have a great foundation that will translate into current generation video game production, a completed vignette environment piece for their portfolios, and a foliage kit they can build upon and use extensively for other projects.
