Vegetation-Climate Interaction How Plants Make the Global Environment

Free Download Vegetation-Climate Interaction: How Plants Make the Global Environment By Dr Jonathan Adams (auth.)
2010 | 266 Pages | ISBN: 3642008801 | PDF | 9 MB
Jonathan Adams provides a readable, accessible account of the way in which the world’s plant life partly controls its own environment. Starting from the broad patterns in vegetation which have classically been seen as a passive response to climate, the book builds up from the local scale – microclimates produced by plants – to the regional and global scale. The influence of plants (both on land and in the ocean) in making clouds, haze and rain is also considered, along with plant effects on the composition of greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. Broad global feedbacks that either stabilize or destabilize the Earth’s environment are explored in the context of environmental change both in the recent geological past and in the near future. Common contentions and misconceptions about the role of vegetation or forest removal in the spread of deserts are also considered. Since the first edition of this book was published, many new papers in this rapidly advancing field have been published. This new, updated Second Edition incorporates information from these and also significant works not included in the first edition. New diagrams and photographs are also included.

Precipitation Partitioning by Vegetation A Global Synthesis (2024)

Free Download Precipitation Partitioning by Vegetation: A Global Synthesis by John T. Van Stan
English | EPUB | 2020 | 295 Pages | ISBN : 3030297012 | 163.31 MB
This book presents research on precipitation partitioning processes in vegetated ecosystems, putting them into a global context. It describes the processes by which meteoric water comes into contact with the vegetation’s canopy, typically the first surface contact of precipitation on land. It also discusses how precipitation partitioning by vegetation impacts the amount, patterning, and chemistry of water reaching the surface, as well as the amount and timing of evaporative return to the atmosphere. Although this process has been extensively studied, this is the first review of the global literature on the partitioning of precipitation by forests, shrubs, crops, grasslands and other less-studies plant types.

Vegetation of Britain and Ireland (2024)

Free Download Michael Proctor, "Vegetation of Britain and Ireland"
English | 2013 | ISBN: 0002201488, 0007513283 | EPUB | pages: 516 | 246.2 mb
Another volume in the popular New Naturalist series, this book covers all aspects of the plant life of Britain and Ireland. Michael Proctor, an expert in his field, discusses the development of the landscape of Britain and Ireland from prehistoric times, including the influence of people and their agricultural practices on the vegetation. He provides a comprehensive account of all the different types of plant habitat in Britain and from woodlands and scrubland to meadows and grasslands, from wetlands and peatlands to heaths, and from the mountain vegetation to the sea coast. He examines the history and ecology of each of these habitats, and describes the rich variety of flora found living there. The author concludes with an account of the changes to our landscape which have taken place during the twentieth century, and prospects for the future, including the effects of environmental change.

The Vegetation and Physiography of Sumatra

Fifteen years ago, approximately half the world population was estimated to live in continental and insular South-East Asia (Burma, Thailand, Kampuchea, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, Philippines). Then the region had a population growth of four million people every month, and the problem of malnutrition was acute for the rural population. International agricultural development organisations decided that their primary aim would be to double existing levels of agricultural production and, taking account of population growth, to double it again by the end of the century (Whyte 1976). Today, while global issues have greatly affected the parameters of the problem, the situation remains both serious and difficult. Despite impressive efforts in education and health, Indonesia for example, where population (179 millions) growth eased off only slightly between 1980 and 1990 (from 2. 3 percent to 1. 9 percent), is having to cope with increasing difficulties in managing natural resources and particularly its evanescent forest assets which, until 1986, were the second largest source of national revenue. Indonesia has the second largest surface area of tropical rain forests in the world (after Brazil) and thus all the problems linked with management and disappearance of those forests. The latest estimate gives a figure of 109 million hectares of forest in 1990, of which 40. 8 million hectares are production forests (Anon. -F AO 1990).
