The U.S. government, military, and industry once saw ocean incineration as the safest and most efficient way to dispose of hazardous chemical waste. Beginning in the late 1960s, toxic chemicals such as PCBs and other harmful industrial byproducts were taken out to sea to be destroyed in specially designed ships equipped with high-temperature combustion chambers and smokestacks. But public outcry arose after the environmental and health risks of ocean incineration were exposed, and the practice was banned in the early 1990s.

Civilisation is thirsty… it never stopped to think what would happen if the water ran out. ALEXANDER BELL Peak water is the point when the available water is not enough to meet the demands of the world’s growing population. We might live on a watery world, but we are exhausting accessible supplies. Many parts of the world are already facing this crisis, and not only in the developing world. Some of the places experiencing ‘peak water’ are in the USA, Europe and the UK. Even the wettest lands will be engulfed in the global catastrophe that looms. This is the issue of our age.

Emerging Water Insecurity in India

Free Download Rajeev Sharma Ranjit Singh Ghuman, "Emerging Water Insecurity in India"
English | ISBN: 1527511448 | 2018 | 330 pages | PDF | 1379 KB
This book investigates water development in India with a special focus on its most agriculturally advanced state, Punjab, as well as the global water scenario on a more general level. It explores and highlights the use and abuse of water, especially sub-soil water, in the agricultural, industrial and domestic sectors. It also reveals the classic case of the virtual exportation of underground water from Punjab to the rest of India. In addition to analysing the fast depleting water table and emerging water insecurity, the study critically examines water governance and policy intervention. The book provides a number of important lessons for all those regions and countries that are encountering the twin issues of food and water scarcity and are grappling with the problem of sustainable development. This insightful text will be of much interest to students and researchers in the water sector and the field of sustainable development, as well as farmers, social scientists, policy makers, agricultural experts, environmentalists, and all those concerned with emerging water insecurity in the world.

Cold-Water Coral Reefs of the World

Free Download Cold-Water Coral Reefs of the World
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031408969 | 861 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 171 MB
Cold-water corals form reef structures in continental margin and seamount settings world-wide, making them more wide-spread and abundant than shallow-water reefs. Their role in these ecosystems is no less important than the influence that shallow-water coral reefs have on tropical systems. They create habitat structure, host endemic species, enhance elemental cycling, alter current flow, sequester carbon, and provide many other ecosystem services that we are just beginning to understand. The rapidly evolving state of knowledge of cold-water and deep-sea coral reefs has not been compiled in over 10 years. This volume synthesizes recent and historical information, reveals new findings from reefs that have been discovered only recently, and presents key avenues for future research. We are on the cusp of understanding the critical role that cold-water coral reefs play in the world’s oceans, and this book lays the foundation on which this knowledge will be built in the future.
