In this course, we begin to discuss applications of chemical reactions to a very important class of chemistry problems – oxidation and reduction (redox) reactions. First, we discuss the meaning of oxidation and reduction and give examples of these processes in the environment.
Next, we introduce the concept an oxidation-reduction reaction, also known as a redox reaction. We spend a great deal of time learning how to balance these types of redox reactions in acidic, neutral, and basic solutions. Finally, we work stoichiometry problems involving redox reactions along with a discussion of the activity series.
Numerous example problems are worked step by step to give the student practice and confidence with redox reactions.

In this course, we begin to discuss applications of chemical reactions to a very important class of chemistry problems – reactions in aqueous solutions. First, we discuss aqueous solutions and ion concentrations and teach by worked example problems how to calculation ion concentrations in solution.
Next, we introduce the concept of an acid and a base, how to classify acids and bases, and why they are important in chemistry. We discuss how acids and bases react, what they produce, and how to perform calculations for titration problems with acids and bases.
Numerous example problems are worked step by step to give the student practice and confidence with acid-base reactions.

Chemistry problems are difficult for many students because there are usually numerous steps for every problem, and every topic in the course builds on the previous topic. If the student has problems with an earlier topic, then all topics that follow will seem harder than they really are.
This course takes every topic one step at a time and teaches the student chemistry by working problems. In this way, the student will build confidence early on through repetition and build exam taking skills at the same time.
This course begins with a discussion of the molecular mass of a compound and how it relates to the formula mass. We then introduce Avogadro’s number and the concept of the mole as a measure of the quantity of a substance. Numerous example problems are illustrated to show the student how to perform calculations involving the mole.
