The Values of Public Service Media in the Internet Society

Free Download The Values of Public Service Media in the Internet Society By Miguel Túñez-López (editor), Francisco Campos-Freire (editor), Marta Rodríguez-Castro (editor)
2021 | 364 Pages | ISBN: 3030564657 | PDF | 5 MB
This book provides a global overview of the challenges and opportunities faced by Public Service Media (PSM) organizations, including the increasing power of digital platforms, changing consumption habits, and reforms on funding models. In order to survive in the new, transforming media ecosystem, PSM organizations need to retain their core values whilst also embracing new values stemming from society’s increasingly complex communication needs and value systems. The contributions of 40 authors from three continents are grouped into three areas in which PSM organizations can create value: innovation, governance and relation to the market, and democratic reinforcement. The book illustrates how PSM can create value for different stakeholders, in different contexts, and through different methods. Contributing to a better understanding of the role of PSM in current media systems, PSM is shown as a key agent for the development of the public sphere and democratic societies.

This book traces the turbulent history of queer visibility in the Irish media to explore the processes by which a regionally based media system shaped queer identities within a highly conservative and religious population. The book details the emergence of an LGBTQ rights movement in Ireland and charts how this burgeoning movement utilised the media for the liberatory potential of advancing LGBTQ rights. However, mainstream media institutions also exploited queer identities for economic purposes, which, coupled with the eruption of the AIDS pandemic in the 1980s, disrupted the mainstreaming goals of queer visibility.

Convenient Criticism Local Media and Governance in Urban China

Free Download Convenient Criticism: Local Media and Governance in Urban China By Dan Chen
2020 | 192 Pages | ISBN: 1438480296 | PDF | 5 MB
Explains why and how local critical reporting can exist in China despite the kinds of media control that are the hallmarks of authoritarian rule. Why and how does critical reporting persist at the local level in China despite state media control, a hallmark of authoritarian rule? Synthesizing ethnographic observation, interviews, survey and content analysis data, Convenient Criticism reveals evolving dynamics in local governance and the state-media relationship. Local critical reporting, though limited in scope, occurs because local leaders, motivated by political career advancement, use media criticism strategically to increase bureaucratic control, address citizen grievances, and improve governance. This new approach to governance enables the shaping of public opinion while, at the same time, disciplining subordinate bureaucrats. In this way, the party-state not only monopolizes propaganda but also expropriates criticism, which expands the notion of media control from the suppression of journalism to its manipulation. One positive consequence of these practices has been to invigorate television journalists’ unique brand of advocacy journalism.

The Making Sense of Politics, Media, and Law

Free Download The Making Sense of Politics, Media, and Law: Rhetorical Performance as Invention, Creation, Production
English | 2023 | ISBN: 100933638X | 318 Pages | PDF (True) | 8 MB
From Trump’s ‘make America great again’ to Johnson’s ‘build back better’, performative politicians use The Making Sense to persuade their public audiences. Law ‘makers’ do it too: A courtroom trial is a ‘truth factory’ in which facts are not found but forged. The ‘court of popular opinion’ is another such factory, though its processes are often flawed and its products faulty. Where courts of law aim to make civil peace, ‘trial by Twitter’ makes civil strife. Even in ‘mainstream’ media, journalists make news for public consumption, so that all news is to an extent ‘fake news’. In a world of making, how can we separate craft from craftiness? With insights from disciplines including law, politics, rhetoric, media studies, psychology, sociology, marketing, and performance studies, The Making Sense of Politics, Media, and Law offers a constructive way to approach controversies from transgender identity to cancel culture. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.
