Race, Gangs and Youth Violence Policy, Prevention and Policing

Free Download Anthony Gunter, "Race, Gangs and Youth Violence: Policy, Prevention and Policing"
English | ISBN: 1447322878 | 2017 | 288 pages | EPUB | 622 KB
This book aims to challenge current thinking about serious youth violence and gangs, and their racialisation by the media and the police. Written by an expert with over 14 years’ experience in the field, it brings together research, theory and practice to influence policy. Placing gangs and urban violence in a broader social and political economic context, it argues that government-led policy and associated funding for anti-gangs work is counter-productive. It highlights how the street gang label is unfairly linked by both the news-media and police to black (and urban) youth street-based lifestyles/cultures and friendship groups, leading to the further criminalisation of innocent black youth via police targeting. The book is primarily aimed at practitioners, policy makers, academics as well as those community-minded individuals concerned about youth violence and social justice.

Political Silence of Youth in Togo Mobile Phones, Information and Civic (dis)Engagement

Free Download Keja, "Political Silence of Youth in Togo: Mobile Phones, Information and Civic (dis)Engagement "
English | ISBN: 3110675269 | 2022 | 220 pages | EPUB, PDF | 4 MB + 68 MB
This book paints an image of sociality in duress, describing how new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) bring possible changes in political engagement and civic-ness. The political branch of the field of ICT-for-Development (ICT4D) is firmly convinced that this translates in civic engagement and democratisation. This book questions this conception, by showing that mistrust greatly increases through new ICT in a society where mistrust has been internalised. These processes are examined in the society encountered in Sokodé, the capital of the Central Region of Togo, in the period between 2015 and 2020, when the mobile phone became widespread among young people.

Inhabiting Borders, Routes Home Youth, Gender, Asylum

Free Download Ala Sirriyeh, "Inhabiting Borders, Routes Home: Youth, Gender, Asylum "
English | ISBN: 1138272272 | 2016 | 230 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
In recent years there has been growing interest in the experiences of young people seeking asylum in Europe. While the significance of the role of age is recognized, both youth transitions and trajectories beyond the age of eighteen are still largely unexplored, the role and impact of mobility predominantly centering on experiences of movement from country of origin to country of settlement. Inhabiting Borders, Routes Home contends that in considering migration and settlement experiences of young refugees it is also important to consider the role of their mobility through age and transitions in the country of settlement. Based on narrative research with young refugees, this book explores how migration journeys are intertwined with life course journeys and transitions into adulthood, shedding light on the manner in which gender intersects with age in experiences of migration and settlement, with close attention to the processes by which ‘home’ is understood and constructed. Through the concept of ‘home’ the book draws together and reflects on interconnections between integration in areas such as education or housing and experiences of social networks. Examining experiences of the asylum process and the manner in which they are interwoven within a wider narrative of home both within and beyond, Inhabiting Borders, Routes Home will be of interest to social scientists working in the areas of migration, asylum, intersectionality and the life course.

Youth in Revolt Reclaiming a Democratic Future

Free Download Henry A. Giroux, "Youth in Revolt: Reclaiming a Democratic Future"
English | 2012 | pages: 218 | ISBN: 1612052630, 1612052649 | PDF | 1,5 mb
Recently, American youth have demonstrated en masse about a variety of issues ranging from economic injustice and massive inequality to drastic cuts in education and public services. Youth in Revolt chronicles the escalating backlash against dissent and peaceful protest while exposing a lack of governmental concern for society’s most vulnerable populations. Henry Giroux carefully documents a wide range of phenomena, from pervasive violent imagery in our popular culture to educational racism, censorship, and the growing economic inequality we face. He challenges the reader to consider the hope for democratic renewal embodied by Occupy Wall Street and other emerging movements. Encouraging a capacity for critical thought, compassion, and informed judgment, Giroux’s analysis allows us to rethink the very nature of what democracy means and what it might look like in the United States and beyond.

English | ISBN: 0691074542 | 2001 | 400 pages | PDF | 26 MB
They called themselves "Vampires," "Dragons," and "Egyptian Kings." They were divided by race, ethnicity, and neighborhood boundaries, but united by common styles, slang, and codes of honor. They fought-and sometimes killed-to protect and expand their territories. In postwar New York, youth gangs were a colorful and controversial part of the urban landscape, made famous by West Side Story and infamous by the media. This is the first historical study to explore fully the culture of these gangs. Eric Schneider takes us into a world of switchblades and slums, zoot suits and bebop music to explain why youth gangs emerged, how they evolved, and why young men found membership and the violence it involved so attractive.
